Who is Cervantes?

“75th Rangers, 4th Battalion, Echo Company […] We were tasked to the Corps of Engineers, hunting down insurgents near the major cities. We were stationed in Nineveh at the time. Northwest corner, near Turkey. Mosul, Tal Afar, if those sound familiar. […]”

“And where are you from, originally?”

“Brownsville. Right on the border. Born here, but plenty of family on both sides. Army was a way out.” He shrugged, eighteen years summed up in a couple terse phrases.

Clearcut (2018)

What happened to Cervantes’s squad?

“I think I was blown clear when the chopper started spinning out. We were flying low to avoid drawing too much attention. I probably fell less than thirty feet.”

“But when the Army came to search for you, they didn’t find you.”

“Someone else found me first.” Adrian recounted the story in brief: the family of Yazidi Kurds, the weeks wavering in and out of unconsciousness, the years of struggling to walk again.

“But why did they bother?” Dylan asked.

“Because of the case. The money that I have for your family is your share of what was in that case.”

[…]

“And this money doesn’t belong to someone else?” Lori asked. “What makes you so sure?”

“Because they declared me dead without finding my body.” Adrian’s voice lowered. “Because I spent the next five years in a village fewer than twenty miles from the crash site and no one ever came to check. No one writes off an entire squad like that unless they’re worried about what they’d find.”
